Abstract

This study analyzes the continuous tradition of Sri Lankan mural painting from Anuradhapura and Sigiriya through to the Kandyan era (18th-19th Century). Using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, we examine the preparation of traditional binders (wood apple gum and animal glue) and earth pigments (red and yellow ochres, lampblack, and terra verde). The paper elucidates the strict spatial grids and narrative sequencing deployed by Sittara master craftsmen in rock-cut image houses across Sri Lanka.
